Watermelon Snow Turning Mountains Pink And Red In Utah

Mountain snow in Cache County, Utah is putting on a show right now.

Visitors have been grabbing pictures of red, pink, and orange snow covering the mountains in the county, and while it sounds like something otherworldly, scientists say it’s being caused by blooming green algae found in mountain ranges around the world.

Scientists also say the amount of algae in the western U.S. could be making drought conditions worse.
