Portsmouth, Virginia, Humane Society’s Paws Around PTown program pairs shelter dogs with local families for field trips around the town. The idea is that they might just run into a prospective pet parent and find a new forever home for the shelter pet. As part of the program, the Cushna family picked up a Great Pyrenees named Moose for a day out on the town last Saturday.

Although the Cushnas and Moose did meet one potential new parent for Moose, the person couldn’t adopt that day, so the family took Moose back to their houseboat for a sleepover. Early the next morning, a fire broke out on a neighboring boat and quickly spread to the Cushna’s vessel. Fortunately, Moose was alert to the fire and woke the whole family in time for them to escape the blaze.

The Cushnas are now singing Moose’s praises for saving their family. “What I like to think about is we saved Moose from the situation Moose was in, and Moose definitely saved us on the boat,” Christopher Cushna says. Although the family did lose their houseboat, they say they're alive because of Moose. And just a few hours later that day, the hero was adopted by that person they’d met the day before.
