My wife is out of town this week, and I've found myself up late at night. Why? I'm afraid of the dark. Ok? There I said it! Every noise I hear there is a murderer with a knife, and my blankets won't save me.

With all the bears spotted around Akron I thought I would share some tips on what to do if you encounter a bear - SAFETY FIRST! - KK

If you encounter a bear: 

• First, ignore the poop in your pants, you can get to it later. The minor discomfort is mild compared to say, a severed limb. 
• If the bear is not paying any attention to you, trust me he is because you look delicious! Slowly and quietly back away while watching the bear to make sure it isn't following you. Serpentine. 
• Do not approach the bear to get a twitpic. 
• Raise your arms to let the bear know you are a human. This exposes your meat hooks to the bear and if you've been watching your diet, he'll ignore you. Make yourself look as big as possible. Speak in a firm but non-threatening voice while looking at the bear and backing away while saying "you don't want to eat me do you Mr. Bear?"
• Watch the bear to gauge its reaction to you. Generally, the noisier the bear is, the less dangerous it is, providing you don't approach the bear. If a bear huffs, pops its jaw or stomps its paws on the ground, run and scream like a school girl. 
• If a bear closely approaches you, drop any food you are carrying. Why do you have food near a bear? Continue backing up.
• If the bear continues to try to approach, stand your ground and be aggressive - use your whistle or air horn. You always carry an airhorn don't you? Yell, stand tall, wave your arms and throw objects, like the air horn. 
• If a bear keeps advancing and is getting close, continue to stand your ground. Use your bear pepper spray (you brought that too, right? ) and anything else to threaten or distract the bear - bears will often first test to see if it is safe to approach you.
• Do not run or climb a tree. Bears can run faster and climb better than you.
• If the bear makes contact, a polite word for slashing, fight back with everything you have. It won't be much of a fight but at least it'll be over quick. 

Scored some sweet mason jar glasses at Wal*Mart for $4. Thinking of replacing every glass in the house with these. My wife is Gonna love 'em. Can't wait to ask Starbucks to fill one.
